Introduction: The clinical internship is a critical phase for translating theoretical knowledge into practical competence and forming professional identity in medical sciences. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of Surgical Technology graduates regarding their internship at Maragheh University of Medical Sciences.
Materials and Methods: This qualitative study employed a descriptive phenomenological approach in 2025. Using purposive criterion sampling, 14 graduates who had completed internship units were selected. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Colaizzi’s seven-step method. The trustworthiness of the findings was ensured through Lincoln and Guba's four criteria.
Results and Discussion: Data analysis revealed five main themes: 1) Educational Quality and Curriculum Planning (theory-practice gap), 2) Learning Environment and Human Factors (role of instructors, interaction with medical staff), 3) Infrastructure and Environmental Standards (lack of welfare facilities, heterogeneity of training settings), 4) Personal Experience and Professional Development (transition from anxiety to confidence), and 5) Ideal Visions of Internship (structured program, dedicated trainers, standardized environment). Findings indicated that while the internship is highly valued for skill acquisition, structural and environmental challenges significantly impact the learning experience.
Conclusion: Optimizing the internship program requires revising the alignment between theoretical content and clinical practice, providing dedicated clinical educators, standardizing facilities, and implementing a structured, objective-driven plan.
