Objectives: Medical education is one of the most complex and challenging fields for training individuals with adequate practical and scientific skills. Given the rapid advancements in the medical world and the placement of individuals in stressful situations, it is essential to train students who can make the best decisions to save lives in specific circumstances. One of the new techniques in this area is the use of games in training individuals, which not only increases students' interest and engagement but also enhances their practical skills.
Method: In this study, the curriculum for 52 medical students during their internship and clerkship was taught using two methods: traditional teaching and game-based learning. The game-related topic was implemented by two trained volunteer students using Kahoot software. Pre-tests and post-tests were administered before and after the teaching sessions. At the end of both methods, students' opinions were collected using a self-made questionnaire based on the Kirkpatrick model.
Results: Students' scores in the post-test improved in both teaching methods compared to the pre-test. No significant difference was observed between the game-based and traditional teaching methods. However, students showed increased interest and engagement, and their learning was associated with greater retention.
Conclusion: The use of game-based teaching methods can lead to more effective learning by enhancing students' interest and participation. Developing practical games and placing students in simulated real-life situations can improve their practical skills.
