Abstract

This semi-experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of clinical teaching associate model on the cognitive learning and clinical skills of nursing students in Abadan Nursing School in 1392. The statistical population was all nursing students in eighth semester including 31 students who were randomly divided into two intervention and control groups of 15 and 16 students, respectively. The control group was trained by an academic staff through traditional method, whereas intervention group was educated under the supervision of a clinical nurse using clinical teaching associate model. The data gathering instrument was a cognitive learning domain questionnaire completed by students in the first and last day of internship program, and a clinical skills learning checklist filled out by academic staff in the last day of internship; its validity was determined through content method using viewpoints of 7 academic members and two nurses of Thalassemia ward. In addition, the reliability of the questionnaire and check list was estimated by 98% using test-retest and inter-rater methods, respectively. The results showed that the difference between the average scores before and after the clinical teaching, using paired t-test, in cognitive learning domain was not significant in both groups (p> 0.05). However, the average of clinical skills in the intervention group, 16.23 ± 2.88, showed a significant increase in comparisonto the control group, 13.66± 2.89, (p < 0.001). According to the present survey, employing clinical teaching associate method in training nursing students can lead to promotion of cognitive learning level and development of clinical skills. Therefore, it is recommended to use the clinical teaching associate model.
