Evaluating the effect of multiple-choice questions on enhancing the critical thinking of medical students based on Bloom's taxonomy

Introduction: Medical schools are obliged to train interested physicians with high-level thinking skills. Appropriate assessment practices help support medical students' understanding and strengthen their ability to integrate and synthesize information. Multiple-choice questions are the most common method for measuring student learning. Method: In order to determine the effect of multiple-choice questions on strengthening critical thinking skills in medical students, a search was conducted using relevant keywords in the international databases Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and Persian databases Magiran, SID, and the Research Articles Bank, as well as the Google Scholar search engine. Results: Bloom's Taxonomy has been used to describe the levels of cognitive learning. The original classification was developed by Bloom and his colleagues. This classification was revised by one of Bloom's colleagues, David Kratwell, and his colleagues. In the world of clinical procedures, learners are expected to develop higher-order thinking skills that encompass all of Bloom's levels. Bloom's framework was originally developed to assist in curriculum design and development, but it has also been used to guide assessment. Conclusion: The contextual nature of medical education requires that students draw on a variety of sources for meaningful learning. To do this, learners must construct schemas that use prior knowledge to aid in the acquisition of new knowledge. Little is known about the relationship between the different levels in Bloom's taxonomy, and although it is assumed that skills at higher levels in Bloom's taxonomy involve lower levels, how this happens is unclear.

A Review of Traditional and Modern Methods of Teaching Anatomy and Physiology Courses in Medical Universities

Introduction: Teaching anatomy and physiology, as the foundation of basic medical sciences, plays an important role. Instruction in these courses within medical schools—key centers of medical education—should be designed not only to convey theoretical knowledge but also to strengthen students’ ability to translate that knowledge into practical skills for patient care, health improvement.Method: This study is a narrative review comparing traditional and modern approaches to teaching anatomy and physiology. More than 50 scientific sources published in Persian and English between 2000 and 2024 were examined and analyzed. Databases searched included the SID, PubMed, and Google Scholar, using keywords such as “anatomy education,” “physiology education,” “teaching methods,” and “integrated education.”Results: Surveys of students indicate that anatomy and physiology are more valuable than other basic science courses. Although traditional teaching methods are still important, they are insufficient on their own meet the educational needs of the new generation of students. The increase in student enrollment, the limitations of traditional teaching resources, including human cadavers, and the advancement of digital technologies have led to a trend toward the use of new educational technologies. Research findings highlight that tools such as virtual reality, 3D modeling software, gamification, and blended learning enhance students’ spatial reasoning, learning motivation, active engagement, and overall academic performance. Conclusion: the need for appropriate infrastructure, teacher training, and administrative costs presents challenges. Finally, the use of hybrid approaches, combining traditional methods and new technologies, is suggested as an effective solution to improve the quality of teaching in these courses.
