Abstract
Academic performance is influenced by many factors that one of these factors is achievement motivation. Given the importance of achievement motivation in the teaching-learning process, this study aimed to assess "the relationship between achievement motivation and academic performance in nursing and midwifery students studying in Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences in 2014-2015”. This was a descriptive-analytic and cross sectional study. The study samples consisted of all students studying in the School of Nursing and Midwifery of Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences in the year 2015-2016 and, data collection instrument was Hermens Academic Performance questionnaire. Afterwards, results showed that; the mean and standard deviation of students score achieved from the Achievement Motivation Questionnaire were 83.52 and 6.52 respectively. In addition, there was significant correlation between academic performance and achievement motivation (P<0.001). However, there was a significant negative correlation between the achievement motivation, age and educational terms (P<0.001). In addition, the difference in mean scores of achievement motivation of students in the study, was statistically significant (p <0.001). Generally, the findings of this study showed that achievement motivation was associated with academic performance of students. Given the importance of academic achievement in the educational system, and those affected by people motivation, identifying the achievement motivation and offering approaches to improve it, can guarantee improvement of student in an educational system.
