Abstract

Abstract: The first day of clinical education activities in a new clinical environment are almost always considered as a stressful event for nursing students. This study conducted to detection mental health nursing students and its relationship with some individual indicators and the first clinical education experience. In this cross – correlation study, sampling was in the census on 24 first year nursing students (arrival to nursing school and end of second semester) in Ahvaz Jundishapour University of Medical Sciences. 22 people completed questionnaires were enrolled. Data collection instruments included demographic and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) respectively. After data collection, data extract and analyze by using of descriptive statistics and inferential methods: paired t test and independent t test. The results of present study showed no association between any of the profile with GHQ scores (P> 0.05).But the results indicated an association between positive or negative feeling pre-clinical education experiences and mental health. Students responses to test the GHQ-28 on arrival, showed that 25% percent (6) of all studied students (24people), were assessed as vulnerable students, After the first experience of clinical education, 41% (9) of 22 of them were diagnosed as the vulnerable students group. Statistic analysis showed significant difference between the GHQ scores before and after training. Regarding to obtain findings, nursing students become more vulnerable for mental health after the first clinical training. It seems necessary, do some good programs to make training less stressful atmosphere in the clinical environment.
